So your looking for a cell phone Here are some things to concider

By Aj Martirano

The problem for cell phone users is the fact the phones are continually changing; buyers are bombarded by new models that have an ever increasing range of 'must have' functions. Education is the key to successfully buying or arranging a contract; below are some facts every user should know before upgrading.

Every user will occasionally experience the race against battery life as they try to use up every ounce of power there is before recharging. The result of this being done constantly means you may find yourself buying a new cell phone battery prematurely as your existing one is no longer holding a charge.

The back light is the second biggest power drain of any cell phone battery but this can be either turned off or use the auto back light off function if your phone is supplied with one. The biggest drain on the cell phone battery is when it is trying to receive a signal and a full charge can fade completely overnight even though it is not being used just because it cannot find a signal so if this is the case, turn it off. The longer you talk the more power you will use; limit your usage of cell phone games or Internet browsing as these are high users of battery power even though you're not actually talking.

One way that young people get caught out is with the many things they can now download onto their phones which are often chargeable even if this is not made clear at the time of purchase. As far as children are concerned, parents should look for a facility where they can disable this feature or ensure that only the parent can order them.

The two man types of agreements for cell phone users are pay-per use and a monthly contract which can run for one or two years but which option you decide upon will depend on how often you intend to use it. Only you will know how often you make calls and how long they are on average but the pay-per use agreement is probably not going to be the most cost effective if you are someone who uses the phone a great deal. Some features like tri-band or quad-band means they can be used in Europe and Asia but these may only be available with phones that are part of a long term agreement so look out for deals that will be of benefit to you.

Also with any plan, consider if long distance is included so find out the usual roaming charges, connection fees (if applicable), and if there are any other hidden fees in the plan. Steer clear of a contract that does not supply the phone with an insurance warranty as you could be liable for any costs if it were stolen or inadvertently damaged.

You also want to make sure that the parts and accessories are easily obtained from any regular cell phone store, even if you purchase the phone from an Internet based company.
